Cover Reveal: Germany!

Want to see the German cover of THE NIGHT WE SAID YES? (Or, shall I say, DIE NACHT, IN DER WIR UNS WIEDERSAHEN?) Ta Da!

Isn’t it great?! The team at Random House Germany CBT did such an amazing job! It’s definitely different from the USA/Canada cover, but oh do I love it! And it’s true to the book – one of my favorite scenes takes place in a pool (and, fun fact, they’re definitely wearing clothes in said scene, as the picture portrays).

Also the title loosely translates to “The Night We Met Again,” which is perfect.

It’s being released August 10, 2015, and i’m so excited to see it out in the wild abroad! (Anyone planning a trip there? Want to get me a picture?)

For fun, here’s info on the book and myself in German. Clearly I have some language learning to do.

Book on the Go

What does one do after getting their advanced reader copies?

If that one is me, it’s bring the book to work and take photos around the library. Because why not?

But first, some morning coffee.

Obviously my ARC would use a literary mug.

Now off to work!

You may be the guest of honor, but you still have to work, ARC. And watch out for the monster door.

LOOK! THERE YOU ARE ON THE SHELF! YOU LOOK WONDERFUL!

So perfect! So great on the shelf! (Like the bookends my teen club made? Each is based on a different book – that’s “The Book Thief”.)

But let’s be honest, when you’re actually checked in, you’ll be on the front of every display.

Librarian bias.

Can’t wait to see you as a real, hardcover, beautiful book, ARC!

Some Fun Now

A few fun book updates:

My advanced copies are in! Look at them! They’re beautiful!

I might have cried (a lot) when I opened the box with them. I also might have non-verbally cheered. (I have a cold now, so my cheering was rather raspy.) Still, I’m beyond excited to see the book as a Real Thing. Each step of the way is exciting, each update thrilling, but seeing it as this – an actual physical thing – is truly amazing. I’m so in love.

(Also terrified because that means people will be reading it now.)

Aside from that, the book is available for pre-order, if you’re interested, on Amazon and the HarperCollins website. Which means i’m on the HarperCollins website, which is INSANE.

So insane.

All that to say, my book is doing well.

And I hope you are, too.

Smile

L has had her first ever cold this past week (which KIND OF got in the way of my cover reveal. THANKS L.TIME YOUR COLDS BETTER.) It’s been sad, seeing her so stuffy and coughing throughout the night. She’s herself, but not really. Tired, angry, sad, confused. And as much as I try to explain to her what’s going on, I know my words aren’t helping much. An appetite would be better. Not vomiting would be better.

But this morning, for a second, between cries, I smiled big at her to cheer her up, and she stopped. She looked up. She beautifully smiled back.

And I thought how wonderful it is, to change your mood so quickly. I thought, how great it is that something as simple as a smile could make you smile, too. It’s crazy, isn’t it?

Wouldn’t it be great, if it was always that easy? If you’re having a bad day and a something so simple could turn everything around? That a simple gesture could make a bad feeling great? If that was enough?

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if a small smile could make you incredibly, overwhelmingly happy?

And then she smiled again.

And then she giggled.

And as I smiled back, I thought, oh, it can.

The Story Behind the Cover

Untitled-4THIS is the cover for THE NIGHT WE SAID YES! Isn’t it wonderful? Doesn’t it scream “I AM THE BEST BOOK EVER?!” (Okay, maybe not, but I’m kind of proud of it.) As I mentioned on my cover reveal yesterday, I’m extremely happy with the direction HarperTeen decided to go. Yes, the romance is central, but so is the friendship. To me, friendships are relationships, and, especially in high school, best friends are just as important as boyfriends/girlfriends. I try to show that in my book.

But here’s the fun part of creating this beautiful cover: when my editor asked if I had any thoughts on the image, prior to design, I pleaded for one thing – for it not to be a kissing cover.

Don’t get me wrong, I think there are some LOVELY kissing covers out there, and, yes, my book totally has kissing in it. But if you were to see a cover with two people kissing, and then were to read my title…what would you think?

EXACTLY.

Apparently HarperTeen had the same idea, and already said no to that type of cover. It’s a wonderful feeling, knowing you’re on the same page with your publisher. It’s also hilarious, to me, thinking that they were discussing that.

After, I was asked if I wanted just Matt and Ella on the cover, or if I preferred all four of the characters. I asked for four, but left it to them, because they know best. They know what image will work. But, as it happens, they went with four, believing in the friendship plot. (The message of friendship is also woven into the official description, too, which I adore.) And I cried with happiness at the final image.

So what you see here today is the final product, and what will grace bookstore and library shelves June 16th of next year.

HarperTeen designers, I love you.
